The Warren County-Vicksburg PublicLibrary will be open this week Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9a.m. To 7 p.m. There is no story time this week. The library remainsclosed today, Monday December 26, 2011 and will close for New Yearsstarting Friday December 30, 2011 and will reopen on Tuesday, January3, 2012 at 9 a.m. with the library's regular hours.

If youhave a Kindle, Nook, iPad, or other E-book reader, classic E-Books(electronic books) are available for checkout through the thelibrary’s subscription to WorldBook on line, and are available tobe downloaded in several different formats. Instructions areavailable on the library's monthly news letter. There other publiclibraries in Mississippi with e-books available for checkout.

Haute Arte “Alternative Charitable Event” to Benefit Youth Arts Program: Young Professionals Party with a Purpose on Saturday, March 5, 2011

As public school budgets tighten and funding for arts and cultural organization shrinks, youth art programs are systematically eroded and eventually eliminated. In order to support programs that provide opportunities for youth experience the arts, Sirobe Carstafhnur has coordinated several charitable events. Haute Arte, this year’s “alternative charitable event” will benefit the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation’s SPECTRUM program. The event will be held on March 5, 2011 at Suite 106 (106 Wilmington St. in Jackson Mississippi). The event will begin at 8:00 p.m. Admission is $5 with art supplies and $10 without.

The Haute Arte event will include eclectic photography by local photographers G. Miles, Preston Johnson (Ace Up Productions), and Ken Gordon (Ken Gordon Photography) from 8:00PM – 9:00PM. Local visual artists Brother Shambe’ Jones and Ayatti Hatcher will participate in a live “art-off” where they will create pieces at the event. Live music will be provided by local cover band, Soul-Unique, and DJ Sean Mac will spin throughout the evening. Haute Arte attendees will also have the opportunity to add to a collaborative art-piece that will be donated to the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation.

Art will be for sale from artists such as Troy Guildbeaux, H.C. Porter, Lesley Silver, Josh Haily, Ranada Robinson, and Hilari Jones.

The Vicksburg Main Street Program will hold the 23rd Annual Downtown Halloween Costume Contest and Treats on the Streets on Saturday, October 30th. The costume contest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on the corner of Veto and Washington Street and Treats on the Streets will immediately follow the contest. Trophies will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each age category. Children from 0-12 years are eligible for the costume contest. She performed a vocal/ballet combination for her talent in a Miss America Scholarship Pageant in the Teen Division sponsored by the Leaf Foundation. She was also a preliminary winner in talent and evening gown. She tied for interview honors with Brooke Bullock of Petal.

Dove Season Starts September 4

Dove Season starts September 4. Hunters need to be sure their hunting license is current for the 2010 hunting season, complete with Harvest Information Program (HIP) certification. HIP certification is required for hunting all migratory game birds. Upon purchasing a license, hunters are asked questions about their harvest from the previous hunting season. In previous years, the number one citation has been for "no hunting license". This violation has a direct impact on the agency because of the loss of federal aid dollars. Hunters should be sure shotguns are not capable of holding more than three shells, and should be aware of how the field was prepared. Hunting with the aid of bait is illegal, and it is the hunter’s responsibility to know if the field is baited or not. There are three questions the hunter will need to be able to answer regarding how the field was prepared before hunting. Those questions are: “Did I know the field was baited, did I look to see if the field was baited, and did I ask how the field was prepared?” Steve Adcock, Chief of Law Enforcement with MDWFP, states “Our officers have fields across the state under surveillance for baiting this year. We have received tips from neighboring landowners and hunters about baited fields. Hunters in violation of state or federal dove hunting regulations will be cited. Our primary objectives are to protect the resource and make sure everybody has a safe, quality experience.”

Hunters are encouraged to have a safe and enjoyable hunt.

The bag limit for mourning doves is 15 per day with no more than 30 in possession.
The possession limit does not apply on opening day.
Shooting hours are from 30 minutes prior to sunrise to sunset.

All sworn law enforcement officers with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) will be working in concert with local and federal officers to ensure hunters are in compliance with state and federal hunting laws. Violation of any migratory game bird law can be charged both in state and federal courts, resulting in large monetary fines and the loss of hunting privileges for up to three years.

The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation is partnering with Lorelei Books to present “A Katrina Retrospect”, a program dedicated to the impacts of Hurricane Katrina. This program will include authors, artists and photographers that translated their stories and visions through their talents to help individuals understand this horrible tragedy. A book signing and exhibit by statewide and regional figures such as Ellis Anderson, Adam Davenport, Melody Golding, Toni Orrill and H.C. Porter will begin at 2pm. A panel discussion will begin at 3pm and will include the five participants, National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist, Stephen Wilkinson, and Mississippi College sociologist department chair, Gary K. Mayfield, Ph.D., to discuss the many impacts Hurricane Katrina contributed to the area and the human spirit.

Andy Weiner, President and founder of Weiner Development announced pending purchase next month of Pemberton Square Mall and buildings on Pemberton Boulevard at the former Kroger location (across the street from its present location).

Vicksburg Board of Zoning Appeals approved a request from Weiner Development for a deviance from city ordinance for a large sign that would be visible from I-20.

Weiner Development Corporation (WDC) was formed in 1997 by Andy Weiner as an urban and suburban development company and a retail and restaurant consultancy. The founder, Andy Weiner, who served as Chief Operating Officer for Weiner’s Stores, has extensive experience on the retail tenant and is on the developer's side. Coupled with his staff’s skills in marketing, construction management and industry analysis, Mr. Weiner has created a unique company that uses its know-how to create developments with the retail and restaurant tenant first in mind. Registration is now open for the October 9 Over the River Run. The entry fees are $25 Individual, $15 Kids Registration (10 & under), $55 Family pre-race registration (limit of 5), and $75 Corporate Team Pre-race fee (3-5 members). A $5 late charge will apply to entries that are postmarked after October 1st. The first 500 registered participants will receive an official Over the River Run T-shirt in a special goodie bag filled with specialty items from local sponsors. Over the River Run will take place on Saturday, October 9th at 8:00am. The course begins at the Old Mississippi River Bridge located at I-20 and Washington Street and follows a scenic course heading west across the Mississippi River across to Delta, Louisiana and then returns back to the finish line. The event involves a 5-mile run, 5-mile walk and a one-mile fun run for kids. Complimentary entertainment, fun and refreshments for all runners, walkers and volunteers will follow the race in the Ameristar Delta Point parking lot. The after-party will be one not to miss. Musical entertainment will be provided by the party band, Slaphappy, and inflatable surprises for kids will be on hand.

This Grand Prix Event is directed by the Mississippi Track Club

After rhe race. entertainment, fun and refreshments for all runners, walkers and volunteers after the race in the Ameristar Delta Point parking lot. The after-party is the place to be! Entertainment by “Slaphappy”.

Vicksburg Police recently made arrests in connection with a criminal ring of individuals involved in a statewide pyramid type scam with people cashing fraudulent checks with matching fake IDs. After similar bad checks matched from two different Vicksburg businesses, Vicksburg police alerted other law enforcement agencies in our area. That turned up similar activity in many cities around the state, which led to search warrants and arrests. More warrants and arrests are pending.

White-tailed Deer Season finalized for Mississippi

White-tailed Deer Season has bee finalized by Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. There will be three Deer Management Zones again this season with antler criteria based on minimum inside spread or minimum main beam length. Deer bag limits remain unchanged from last year (3 bucks and 5 does). Archery season will run from October 1 – November 19 in Zones 1 & 3 and from October 15 – November 19 in Zone 2. There is also a Special Archery Hunt running concurrently with the open seasons for hunting deer with guns and primitive weapons. Youth will have exclusive opportunity with a gun on November 6 – 7 and will be allowed to use any firearm during any primitive weapon season once again this year. New this year is a statewide Special Primitive Weapon Hunt from November 8 – 19 for antlerless deer only.

A Piggly Wiggly Wedding: Weddings are big news in the small Delta town of Second Creek, Mississippi. Especially when the wedding is that of the town's new mayor: the seventy-one-year-young Hale "Mr. Choppy" Dunbar, about to tie the knot with Gaylie Lyons, to whom he'd first lost his heart back in the 1940s. Hale, of course, used to be a butcher and proprietor of Second Creek's Piggly Wiggly supermarket, which closed its doors a few years back, but not until after hosting the wedding of Laurie Lepanto and her ballroom-dancing husband, Powell Hampton.

Unfortunately, Hale and Gaylie's wedding plans are not going smoothly. Gaylie's grown children, both spoiled by their late father's money, are determined to second-guess their mother's move to this small Southern town-no matter how lovely the neighbors or pretty the scenery. It falls to the town's indefatigable army of matrons-the Nitwitts-to plan the kind of welcome for Gaylie's children that will get them on board for the wedding, and make way for more than one new beginning in Second Creek.

The 27th Annual Night Out Against Neighborhood Crime and Drugs is on Tuesday, August 3, 2010. This event is free for the whole family. This year's theme is "Neighborhoods Need to Pool Their Resources Against Crime." This is part of the larger "27th Annual National Night Out" (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW).

National Night Out is designed to:

Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

First Lady Michelle Obama Christens National Security Cutter Stratton (WMSL 752) First Lady Michelle Obama christened the Gulf Coast-built U.S. National Security Cutter Stratton (WMSL 752) in front of 3,000 guests on July 23, calling the ship "truly magnificent."

Stratton is the third of eight planned National Security Cutters being built in Pascagoula for the U.S. Coast Guard. With its 418-foot length and 4,700 ton full load displacement and state-of-the art command and control systems, the NSC is the largest and most technologically advanced of the new multi-mission cutters.

"Here in Pascagoula, you've been building ships for centuries," said Mrs. Obama. "It's in your blood—a proud tradition passed from generation to generation. Your hands have given us some of the greatest ships in the United States Navy and Coast Guard. So whether you're a welder or a fitter or a burner—whatever your craft —today is also a tribute to you and your families, and America thanks you."

Stratton is named in honor of Captain Dorothy C. Stratton (1899-2006), the U.S. Coast Guard's first female commissioned officer and director of the SPARS ("Semper Paratus - Always Ready"), the U.S. Coast Guard Women's Reserve during World War II. SPARS mainly replaced men in shore stations during most of the war; however as the war progressed SPARS were placed in charge of greater areas of previously male-only control —including as parachute riggers, aviation machinists' mates and air control tower operators. Several former SPARS attended the ceremony.

In his ceremony remarks, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding president Mike Petters recognized all of the shipbuilders who are building Stratton and added, "Captain Stratton was truly a trailblazer – and I know that
her passion and energy will be embodied in this great ship named for her, built by the best shipbuilders in the world."

Mississippi Attorney General Warns of Scams Targeting Diabetics

The Mississippi Attorney Generals Office is warning consumers of a recent scam targeting those with diabetes. Consumers have called the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi and the American Diabetes Association to report that they are receiving unsolicited requests from individuals purporting to be employees with those organizations. The scam artists are calling diabetes victims and requesting personal information such as social security numbers, dates of birth and credit card information. The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi and the American Diabetes Foundation reported these complaints to the Consumer Protection Division of the Mississippi Attorney Generals Office.

Legitimate organizations like the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi and the American Diabetes Foundation will not initiate a phone call or send an email asking you to provide, update or confirm sensitive information. Before responding to any request for personal information, consumers should contact the institutions directly to ensure the request is valid.

“Unfortunately, scam artists will often use the name of reputable organization to lure consumers into thinking they are dealing with a familiar organization,” said Attorney General Jim Hood. “Because of this, we continue to urge consumers to use caution before acting on unsolicited emails, voice mails, text messages or phone calls requesting personal information. Educating our consumers is one of the most important actions we can take to combat scams like this one.”

Anyone who suspects they have been a victim of this scam or any other, should contact the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney Generals Office at 1-800-281-4418.

INGREDIENTS
Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1 1/4 cups)

1 slice center-cut bacon
1 tablespoon butter
2 cups chopped sweet onion
2 cups fresh corn kernels (about 3 ears)
1 (16-ounce) bag frozen, shelled edamame, thawed
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon sugar
3 plum tomatoes, coarsely chopped
1 red bell pepper, seeded and coarsely chopped
3 tablespoons torn basil

Cook bacon in a nonstick skillet over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon from pan, reserving 2 teaspoons drippings in pan; coarsely chop bacon.
Increase the heat to medium-high. Melt butter in drippings in pan. Add onion; sauté 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add corn kernels; sauté for 3 minutes or until lightly charred. Add edamame, and sauté for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in vinegar and next 5 ingredients (through bell pepper); cook 30 seconds, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle with bacon and basil.

In the South, the seasons are:

Warren County first in Mississippi to benefit from ICE strategy to enhance the identification, removal of criminal aliens

On Tuesday July 20, 2010, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) began using a new biometric information sharing capability in Warren County that helps federal immigration officials identify aliens, both lawfully and unlawfully present in the United States, who are booked into local law enforcement's custody for a crime. This capability is part of Secure Communities - ICE's comprehensive strategy to improve and modernize the identification and removal of criminal aliens from the United States.

Previously, fingerprint-based biometric records were taken of individuals charged with a crime and booked into custody and checked for criminal history information against the Department of Justice's ( DOJ ) Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System ( IAFIS ). Now, through enhanced information sharing between DOJ and the Department of Homeland Security ( DHS ), fingerprint information submitted through the state to the FBI will be automatically checked against both the FBI criminal history records in IAFIS and the biometrics-based immigration records in DHS's Automated Biometric Identification System ( IDENT ).

If fingerprints match those of someone in DHS's biometric system, the new automated process notifies ICE. ICE evaluates each case to determine the individual's immigration status and takes appropriate enforcement action. This includes aliens who are in lawful status and those who are present without lawful authority. Once identified through fingerprint matching, ICE will respond with a priority placed on aliens convicted of the most serious offenses first-such as those with convictions for major drug offenses, murder, rape and kidnapping.

"The Secure Communities strategy provides ICE with an effective tool to identify criminal aliens in local custody," said Secure Communities Executive Director David Venturella. "Enhancing public safety is at the core of ICE's mission. Our goal is to use biometric information sharing to remove criminal aliens, preventing them from being released back into the community, with little or no additional burden on our law enforcement partners."

"We want to make sure that our local law enforcement partners know as much as possible about the people in their custody," said Philip Miller, field office director for the ICE Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations in New Orleans. "By using sophisticated biometrics, the Secure Communities initiative allows us to quickly and accurately identify aliens who pose the greatest threat to our communities. And the program requires no additional costs to the local law enforcement agency."

With the expansion of the biometric information sharing capability to Warren County, ICE is now using it in 467 jurisdictions in 26 states. ICE expects to make it available in jurisdictions nationwide by 2013.

"We applaud the efforts of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) in working with us to remove dangerous criminals from within Warren County," said Sheriff Martin Pace. "This is yet another example of local and federal agencies working together effectively to keep our communities safe."

Since ICE began using this enhanced information sharing capability in October 2008, immigration officers have removed from the United States more than 9,800 criminal aliens convicted of Level 1 crimes, such as murder, rape and kidnapping. Additionally, ICE has removed more than 24,800 criminal aliens convicted of Level 2 and 3 crimes, including burglary and serious property crimes, which account for the majority of crimes committed by aliens. ICE does not regard aliens charged with, but not yet convicted of crimes, as "criminal aliens." Instead, a "criminal alien" is an alien convicted of a crime. In accordance with the Immigration and Nationality Act, ICE continues to take action on aliens subject to removal as resources permit.

The IDENT system is maintained by DHS's US-VISIT program and IAFIS is maintained by the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services ( CJIS ).

"US VISIT is proud to support ICE, helping provide decision makers with comprehensive, reliable information when and where they need it," said US-VISIT Director Robert Mocny. "By enhancing the interoperability of DHS's and the FBI's biometric systems, we are able to give federal, state and local decision makers information that helps them better protect our communities and our nation."

"Under this plan, ICE will be utilizing FBI system enhancements that allow improved information sharing at the state and local law enforcement level based on positive identification of incarcerated criminal aliens," said Daniel D. Roberts, assistant director of the FBI's CJIS Division. "Additionally, ICE and the FBI are working together to take advantage of the strong relationships already forged between the FBI and state and local law enforcement necessary to assist ICE in achieving its goals."

Teddy Bears at Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children

Miss Mississippi, Sarah Beth James, and Miss Outstanding Teen Mississippi, Christina Bostick, will be visiting the patients at the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children Tuesday, July 20 at 2 p.m.

James and Bostick will be passing out teddy bears to the patients and visiting the activity rooms.

The bears were collected during the Teddy Bears and Tiaras campaign, leading up to the 2010 Miss Mississippi pageant in Vicksburg.

James, whose platform is promoting organ and tissue transplantation, will represent the state in the 2011 Miss America Pageant set for January 15 in Las Vegas.

As one of 170 Children's Miracle Network hospitals across the country, Batson Hospital benefits from a unique partnership between The Miss America Organization and Children's Miracle Network. Each year, the new Miss America serves as a Goodwill Ambassador, raising funds and awareness for the nation's premier children's hospitals.

The Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children is the only hospital in the state devoted exclusively to the care and treatment of sick and injured youngsters. More than 150,000 children from all of the state's 82 counties come to Batson Hospital each year. Louise Seger called KIKK Houston radio throughout the day from home and her job to request Patsy Cline records. In early May (1961), while she was speaking to deejay Hal Harris, she learned that Patsy would be playing the Esquire Ballroom. She spread the news and gathered together a group of friends, all dressed in western clothes, or the appearance at the gigantic barn- like club on Hempstead Highway. Louise had insisted they arrive early, and they did. In fact, they were the first. While enjoying her beer Louise looked up.

"I saw this girl looking over the place," recalled Louise. "I thought she was Patsy’s agent. The only time I’d seen Patsy was four years ago on Godfrey. Then something went ding, ding, ding!" Patsy took a seat three tables over from Louise, who was about to burst. She told her friends, "I’m going over there."

All eyes were on her as she walked slowly to the other table.

"Excuse me, Miss Cline?"

"Yes," Patsy said, smiling.

"I just wanted you to know how much I admire your music. I have ‘I Fall to Pieces’ played for me four or five times every day."… Louise introduced herself and asked Patsy to join her group…Patsy kept looking around the club. "This is a mighty damn big place, isn’t it?"

"Yes, ma’am," answered Louise, "but, boy, it’s gonna be packed."… "I’m worried about the band. I don’t know any of the musicians and I wonder if they know my music. Do you?"

"Yes, ma’am, every beat."

"Would you do me a favor and, during the show, watch the drummer so he won’t rush me"…

Louise happily complied…

Around midnight, after Patsy signed autographs and posed for photos, Louise heard Patsy calling for a taxi to return to the Montague Hotel. "No, you’ll go with us. We’ll go to my house so you can have something to eat."… At the kitchen table [they sat] and talked about "broken hearts, husband problems, children problems, loves lost, loves won. We sounded like tow people writing couture songs."… They traded stories until almost 4:00 A.M…

Warren County Chancery Court Judge Orders Sale of Green Acres Cemetery

Mississippi Secretary of State (SOS), Delbert Hosemann investigated Green Acres cemetery’s financial records in March 2009. Serious deficiencies in preneed trust accounts were discovered. Hosemann said "There was supposed to be $583,000 in a pre-sold trust account. There was only $221." The SOS started going over office deeds of trust and property tax liens. The cemetery had a substantial $2.2 Million debt against it. Within 48 hours of that discovery, Warren County Chancery Court Judge Barnes placed Green Acres into Receivership on March 25, 2009 and Mr. Harry Sharp as the receiver with oversight by the Mississippi Secretary of State. Since then, the SOS Office has worked diligently to rehabilitate the grounds and the business and to clear the substantial $2.2 Million debt against Green Acres cemetery. The goal has been to get the cemetery back into private hands as quickly as possible.

Unless a plot purchase is funded with insurance coverage, cemeteries are required to trust 85% of all preneed sales for vaults, memorial markers, and grave opening/closing services. Additionally, 15% must be maintained in a separate perpetual care trust on all sales of grave spaces to ensure the long term care and maintenance of cemetery grounds. There have been pre-need investigations and seizures of other cemeteries in Mississippi since the actions were taken in regards to Green Acres.

Green Acres Cemetery was previously owned by the late Mike Graham of Texas. In order to settle the claim against Graham’s estate, his widow, Linda Graham, and his daughter, Stephanie Graham, agreed to relinquish all ownership interest in the Green Acres property. In addition, Stephanie Graham also relinquished three life insurance policies with a face value of over $550,000 and a cash value of approximately $32,000 to the Green Acres perpetual trust account. “This agreement only settles the claim between the Secretary of State’s Office and Linda and Stephanie Graham,” says Secretary Hosemann. “This does not preclude any private action.”

The Secretary of State’s successful effort to clear a $2.2 Million debt against Green Acres Cemetery in has cleared the way to place the property up for public sale. Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann negotiated the release of the debt with the lienholder at no cost to the State or the cemetery.

Warren County Chancery Court Judge Barnes ordered the sale in Warren County Chancery Court on Friday, July 16, 2010.

“This is a very positive development for the citizens of Vicksburg and our Agency,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. “Not only will this public sale help to heal the residents of Vicksburg whose loved ones are buried at Green Acres, but it also begins to close the chapter on cemeteries under Receivership by the Secretary of State.”

Potential bidders will have until 5:00 pm on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 to inspect the property and submit a sealed bid. Interested parties are asked to contact the Secretary of State’s office at (601) 359-9055 to obtain a bid package. Bids are to be submitted to the Secretary of State’s Office; Attn: Dave Scott at 700 North Street; Jackson, MS, 39202.

The sealed bids will then be opened and recommendations will be submitted to Judge Barnes for approval.

“The individual who ultimately purchases Green Acres will assume the responsibilities of maintenance and upkeep,” says Secretary Hosemann.

Miss Rankin County/Southwest Megan Miller and Miss Spirit of the South Jill Duckworth tied in Lifestyle & Fitness in Swimwear. They were presented bouquets of roses and won $200 scholarships.

In Talent, Miss Delta Blues - Caitlyn Smith was presented a bouquet of roses and won a $300 scholarship. There were fifteen glorious performances making that decision difficult.

The pageant is collecting teddy bears to donate to the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson. All bears collected at the pageant will be delivered by Miss Mississippi's Outstanding Teen 2010, Christina Bostick, and Miss Mississippi 2010. Teddy Bears & Tiaras. Bring it to the stage during the appropriate performance (hint hint: It's an Elvis Presley song that contains the words Teddy & Bear). Get your little one to bring a teddy bear up to help the kids at Batson Children's Hospital.

Patrick Covington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, met with Vicksburg Mayor Paul E. Winfield and state and local leaders on Thursday to discuss strategies to leverage citizen service to solve community problems. Mayor Winfield's commitment to service as a solution led to Vicksburg's naming as one of the 17 founding Cities of Service. Vicksburg was the first stop on Corvington's summer tour to engage diverse communities in the new vision for national service. The agency has a five-year strategic plan to expand opportunities for more Americans to volunteer, serve their communities and solve problems.

On Thursday Corvington toured the AmeriCorps Vicksburg campus, the newest of the five AmeriCorps NCCC campuses nationwide. The Vicksburg campus It opened last fall. It hosts 100+ corps members organized into teams that serve an eleven state region in meeting community needs. In its first year, AmeriCorps NCCC members stationed in Vicksburg have responded to five disasters in four states, assisted thousands of people in mass care facilities, refurbished hundreds of homes for disaster victims, leveraged many thousands of volunteers, gave hundreds of hours of tutoring to students and so much more.

AmeriCorps workers are helping with the BP clean up and are organizing volunteers on the coast. Training for a new class of team leaders is underway. Team leaders will supervise new AmeriCorps members arriving in August.

Dr. Briggs Hobson, chairman emeritus of the Miss Mississippi Pageant Board of Directors, recognized the work of the late John Wayne Jabour, who served as a pageant volunteer for more than 50 years before his recent death. A $1,000 pageant scholarship has been established in his name.

Miss Mississippi State University Fenley Akers won a $200 scholarship in Lifestyle & Fitness in Swimwear competition.

Author Carolyn Haines signs Bone Appétit, the latest installment in her Mississippi Delta Mystery series, and Delta Blues, an anthology of crime fiction she's edited at 12 p.m. at Lorelei Books. Haines will bring with her some of the authors who contributed stories in Delta Blues.

Carolyn Haines grew up in Lucedale and dreamed of becoming a cowgirl, a writer, and Nancy Drew. She was a tomboy growing up, riding her bicycle, building forts in the woods with her brothers, playing baseball and touch football. She and her characters Sarah Booth Delaney, Tinkie, Cece, Coleman, and Millie solve mysteries in a place called Zinnia, Mississippi, where she has had a great time. She has written a whole series of Bones books which explains the spelling of Bone Appétit. Her grandmother told her ghost stories as a child. She frequently retold the stories and turned them later in her life into the mystery stories in her many literary works. She has three horses and a bunch of dogs and cats each with special names which shows her affection for animals.

Miss Mississippi First Night Preliminary Competition

The 2010 Miss Mississippi pageant preliminaries got underway on Wednesday evening, July 7, 2010 at the Vicksburg Convention Center. The theme for this year's pageant is "Two Kings and a Queen." The two kings are Michael Jackson, King of Pop, and Elvis Presley, King of Rock and Roll. Contestants opened the event by dancing to music from Michael Jackson, Queen and Elvis.

David Blackledge, chairman of the board and executive director of the Miss Mississippi Pageant, presented the Volunteer of the Year Award to Laura Franklin, who has been director of the Miss Pontotoc Pageant for many years.

Miss Heritage Ashley Wieronski and Miss Rankin County/Southwest Megan Miller tied in the talent preliminary and won $300 scholarships. Miss Wieronski sang "Circle of Life" from The Lion King (1994), an animated film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation. Megan Miller sang "Angels" from the album In This Skin by Jessica Simpson (2003).

Miss Mid South Danielle Smith and Miss Meridian Mary Margaret Roark tied for the swimwear preliminary and won $200 scholarships.

Miss Mississippi 2009, Anna Tadlock closed Wednesday night's competitions by singing “I'll be There.”, a song made famous and popular by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

Total nonfarm payroll employment declined by 125,000 in June, and the unemployment rate edged down to 9.5 percent, the U.S. Bureau of LaborStatistics reported today. The decline in payroll employment reflected a decrease (-225,000) in the number of temporary employees working on Census 2010. Private-sector payroll employment edged up by 83,000.

An 1890s melodrama produced by Mike Calnan and Walter Johnston. "Gold in the Hills," the Guiness Book of World Records' longest-running melodrama, has played since 1936. Set in the 1890s, it features a relentless hero, a winsome heroine, a ruthless villain, and the wilder side of city life in the infamous New York Bowery.

Cast: actors and actresses ages six through adult, and singers and dancers ages teen through adult.

Miss Mississippi Parade 2010

The 2010 Miss Mississippi Parade starts July 5, 2010 at 7 p.m. in historic downtown Vicksburg. Enjoy an evening out and a Vicksburg tradition. The parade is sponsored by Vicksburg Main Street. The parade runs along Washington Street from Veto to China streets. Autograph parties will follow the parade at participating downtown stores and will stay open until 9 p.m.

2010 Miss Mississippi Pageant July 7 - 10, 2010

The Miss Mississippi Pageant brings thousands of fans to the city of Vicksburg to cheer on their favorite contestant to win the Miss Mississippi crown. 45 contestants will compete to represent the state at the Miss America Pageant in January.
David Blackledge, Miss Mississippi Pageant director said that the Vicksburg Convention Center will have about 2100 people on Saturday night of the pageant, 2000 on Friday night and between 1800-1900 on Wednesday and Thursday.
“Pageant week is a tremendous economic boom for the city,” Blackledge said. “People come in for 8 days from around the state to stay in our hotels, use our florists, and to shop around town especially downtown and at the Outlets.”

This year’s host hotel, La Quinta Inn & Suites, is going above and beyond to make the pageant girls feel at home. Julie Ford, sales and marketing director for MY Hospitality Services L.L.C., said that they are very excited to host the girls and feel like they are helping in the effort to promote Vicksburg in the process. Special deliveries can be made to the contestants Monday through Friday at the La Quinta Inn & Suites from 2-4 p.m.

“We have some exciting things planned for the girls that have never been done before,” said Ford. “The hotel is completely decorated for the pageant. We have each contestant’s picture on a star on her door. Once the pageant starts, each day the winners will have their stars on display in the front of the hotel.”

Ford said that the host hotel has assisted with the parents and directors including putting together tour itineraries for things to do in Vicksburg and a list of Top Ten restaurants to dine at.

“Special requests were broadcasted on facebook and we received 30 phone calls from parents and families on wanting suggestions on what to do in Vicksburg,” said Ford. “We really take advantage of what all our city has to offer to get the parents and friends out and about in the community. One family has 25 people from around the United States and we have planned their whole itinerary on things to do in Vicksburg.

“Two of our hotel properties are sold out for that week and they typically don’t sell out during this week especially with all the new hotels in our area,” said Ford. MY Hospitality Services properties in Vicksburg include the Wingate by Wyndham, Motel 6, Fairfield Inn, La Quinta, and Days Inn. “The pageant is going to be bigger than every this year.”

This year’s Miss Mississippi Pageant is held at the Vicksburg Convention Center at 8 p.m. on Saturday July 10. Preliminary pageants will be Wednesday through Friday July 7-9 also at 8 p.m. Pageant activities begin on July 3 at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center Auditorium with the Prince and Princess Crowning Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

The Miss Mississippi Pageant Parade and autograph parties also contribute to Vicksburg’s “economic boom” during pageant week. The parade will be downtown along Washington Street on Monday July 5 at 7 p.m. An autograph party at participating downtown stores will follow and stores will stay open until 9 p.m.

“The Miss Mississippi Pageant week has a huge impact on downtown,” said Kim Hopkins, executive director of Vicksburg Main Street. “The parade attracts contestant’s family and friends along with people in our community. Relatives come from all over to support their girls in the pageant. The downtown stores order special items just for this time. Parents are able to send contestants gifts and gift baskets from different stores. Overall it is tremendous for our whole community.” “Sales go up between gifts and people shopping in general,” said Karen Ruggles, owner of Cinnamon Tree, one of downtown’s boutique gift shops. “It gives people a reason to get out and about during the summertime. The pageant is such an asset for our city.”

The Outlets at Vicksburg will also host an autograph party from 10-11:30 a.m. on Thursday July 8 in the meeting room next to Billy’s Italian Restaurant. Select stores will open early at 9:30 a.m. so shoppers can take advantage of sales. “It’s our busiest week of the summer,” said Paige Caldwell, Marketing & Special Events for the Outlets at Vicksburg. “We are happy to help promote the pageant and host one of the events.”

Miss Mississippi 2009 Anna Tadlock will make her last public performance outside the pageant at Vicksburg’s Fourth of July “Sparks on the River.” She will kick off Independence Day festivities at the Vicksburg Waterfront with the National Anthem at 7 p.m.. Music entertainment by Super T and fireworks on the Mississippi River will follow.
